The creation of the lake was formed when both the Chattahoochee and Chestatee Rivers were damned. The dam is at the south end of the lake and was finished in 1956.
When visiting the lake there are a variety of activities that suit most everyone’s needs. Some of the most populate activities include camping, fishing, and boating. The lake currently has over 45 parks and 10 campgrounds along its shores.
Don Carter State Park was added to the list in 2013 as its first state park on the shoreline of the lake. Along with camping, fishing, and boating the lake also offers a golfing area, kayaking, swimming, and water skiing.

Camping on Lake Lanier’s shoreline in one of the 10 different campgrounds gives all visitors time to enjoy all aspects of the lake. The different campgrounds offer a variety of sites, with RV hookups and tent sites. Each of the campgrounds also offers their own features like boat ramps, beaches, hiking trails, and playgrounds. Each of these lovely campgrounds is sure to meet your camping needs.
Camping is always one of the biggest family adventures that we have. Some of the biggest campgrounds on the lake are in the Don Carter State Park located on the north end. Then at the south end is Lanier at Sawnee, then heading onto the western short you will find Bald Ridge Campground. On the eastern side of the shore, you will find Lanier at Van Pugh South. No matter what campground you decide they each have awesome features of their own allowing you to create a family fun adventure or a partner gateway.
Fishing at Lake Lanier offers a unique experience as the premier striper destination for the south. The lake offers guided and unguided fishing trips that are sure to make many memories. The guided trips allow you to have all the fun without all the work. The live baiting and trolling around the lake on the guided experience allow fishers to get the experience of a lifetime. They use the most modern techniques that allow you to get the most out of your trip. The guided trips are an awesome way to get to see the lake and experience of the best features of the lake all in one. Most places offer half day trips, full day or night trips, as well.

From restaurants to adventure activities this lake meets the needs of all visitors. The lake offers a year round resort that also houses 214 rooms, along with 30 cottages. So, it camping is not your thing then the resort is ready for your business.
Along with sleeping accommodations, the resort offers an 18-hole championship golf course with a clubhouse that is enjoyable after a round or two.
